Serious Eye Infection Associated with Soft Contact Lens Solution
What you need to know to prevent eye pain or vision loss
Lehigh Valley, Pa. (June 5, 2007) – If you wear soft contact lenses and are experiencing problems with your eyes, stop using your current lenses immediately. “The Center for Disease Control has identified an outbreak of a serious, but rare, eye infection called Acanthamoeba keratitis, or AK,” says Terry Burger, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network director of infection control. Nearly 60 percent of the 138 people who contracted an AK infection used Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) CompleteR MoisturePlus TM Multi-Purpose Solution. The product has been recalled.
An AK infection can result in permanent vision loss or blindness. If you wear soft contact lenses and use Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) CompleteR MoisturePlus TM Multi-Purpose Solution:
- Stop using the product
- Throw away the remaining solution, including unopened bottles
- Discard your current lenses and storage container
See your eye care professional if you are experiencing:
- An eye infection
- Eye pain
- Eye redness
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light
- A sensation of something in your eye
- Excessive tearing
